Basic Learning Module #1

RAMI 4.0 as the basis for Digital Twins

Industry 4.0 increases the complexity of all business units in the manufacturing industry: Product lifecycles are shortened, the globalization of the value chain increases, and critical decisions must be made quickly. Digital twins are a crucial concept to cope with this complexity and succeed with implementing novel technologies and strategies.

However, there is a need to find a joint language when talking about industry 4.0 and digital twins. The reference architecture model Industry 4.0 (RAMI 4.0) combines the main elements of Industry 4.0 in a three-dimensional layer model. Different views on the digital twin can be arranged systematically using this framework.

Moreover, RAMI 4.0 provides the basis to transform a physical asset into an industry 4.0 component with digital twin properties. For this purpose, the Asset Administration Shell (AAS) was defined which is the digital representation of a physical asset.

In this course, you will

  • Gain knowledge about the reference architecture model Industry 4.0 (RAMI 4.0) and its structure,
  • Learn about the asset administration shell as basis for Digital Twins,
  • Tackle challenges in specifying and implementing Industry 4.0 components,
  • Be enabled to apply RAMI 4.0 on own digital twin use cases.
